Abdominal Pain:-Symptoms,
  • Abdominal pain is known as discomfort or pain in the area between the chest and the pelvis.
  • Abdominal pain can vary in severity, duration, and location, and it can be described as dull, sharp pain, cramps, burning, or stabbing.
  • It can be accompanied with other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, fever, and loss of appetite.
  • Causes of abdominal pain:-

    1.  Gastrointestinal disorders – such as gastritis, acidity, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, and peptic ulcer disease, are the most common causes of abdominal pain.
    2. Urinary Tract Disorders:- such as kidney stones and urinary tract infections, can cause abdominal pain,  with symptoms such as frequent urination, pain or burning during urination, and blood in the urine.
    3. Gynecological Disorders: –  such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease, can cause abdominal pain in women, with symptoms of irregular menstrual cycles, vaginal discharge, and pain during sexual intercourse.
    4.  Due to Appendicitis:-  Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch attached to the large intestine.
    5. Due to Pancreatitis:-  Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, a gland that produces digestive enzymes and hormones.
    6. Due to Gallbladder Disease:- Gallbladder disease, such as gallstones or inflammation of the gallbladder, can cause abdominal pain, usually on the right side of the abdomen.
    7. Intestinal Obstruction:- Intestinal obstruction occurs when the bowel is blocked, usually by a tumor or scar tissue.
    8. Diverticulitis:- Diverticulitis is an inflammation of small pouches in the colon, called diverticula.
    9.  Hernia.

    Diagnostic tests for abdominal pain:-

    • Ultrasound / Sonography
    • Computed tomography (CT) scans
    • Upper endoscopy
    • Urine tests
    • Colonoscopy
    • MRI scan
    • Blood tests

    Treatment option for abdominal pain:-

    The treatment of abdominal pain depends on the underlying cause, here are some medications to treat abdominal pain:-

    • Pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Ibuprofen (Advil),  Acetaminophen (Tylenol), and Diclofenac can used to treat mild to moderate abdominal pain.
    • Antacids: Antacids are used to treat acid reflux and heartburn. Examples of antacids are Tums, Rolaids, and Maalox.
    • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs): PPIs reduce the production of stomach acid, and are used to treat acid reflux and other gastrointestinal conditions. Examples of PPIs include omeprazole (Prilosec), esomeprazole (Nexium), and lansoprazole (Prevacid).
    • Antispasmodics Medications: that help to reduce muscle spasms in the digestive tract. such as dicyclomine ( Bentyl ) and hyoscyamine (Levsin).
    • Antibiotics: Antibiotics prescribed to treat abdominal pain caused by bacterial infections such as gastroenteritis or urinary tract infections.
